Speech in the International Free Software Forum demonstrates how to be more safe and rid of viruses and invasions.

The number of espionage cases grows each year. Security authorities show the vulnerability of systems in various countries. The subject was apporached in the speech "Free Software and Security in the Government", yesterday, May, 7. Working with Free Software, the Serpro (Federal Data Processing Service) advocates the use of Free Software in the government. According to Free Software Strategic Coordinator Deivi Lopes Kuhn, that's a subject thatr shouldn't be a taboo.

"We implemented Free Software in 4 thousand workstations at Serpro in 2004. Almost ten years after, we never had a case of virus infection or invasion. This shows how secure these systems are. There's no such thing as 100% secure. What really exists are system with more or less security. And Free Software provides the best security, so you can work fearless", said Deivi Lopes Kuhn.

Serpro is migrating various government agencies to Free Software. According to Operations Director, Wilton Motta, still there is much resistence in the switch to Free Software.

"Many people say Free Software doesn't work, is bad. But just in the last year, we noticed an increase in Free Software use of 60%. What people don't know is that these systems are very easy to come up with new solutions", said Motta.

The two believe there is a kind of a lack of privacy culture, in the population, and this culture pushes in to some government representatives, as well. Among the agencies receiving Free Software upgrades, are many Ministries (Economy, Justice, Cities, Development), the Presidency of the Republic, the Receita Federal (the Brazilian IRS and customs).
